Canzona is back for, would you believe it, our fifth season! Once again, we will be featuring the core Canzona players and some very distinguished guests.
All 4 concerts will be performed on Sunday afternoons (2PM) at the Island Church, preceded by brunch (wine will be served) prepared by our master caterer, Lynn Stirling. If you like the brunch option, please book early - the brunches were all sold out last year.
Here's our lineup for the season:
Sunday, Nov. 30 2008 - Island Church - Brunch: 12:30 - Concert: 2:00
Songs Without Words: The Romantic era was influenced by both harmonic and melodic innovation. In this concert, we'll look at the power of melody, and
why tunes can affect us so strongly. Works by operatic pioneers Kreuzer and Glinka, and a set of hauntingly beautiful melodic pieces by Max Bruch.
Featuring your original Canzona founders: Jacquey Malcolm, 'Cello, Jonathan Krehm, Clarinet, Coby Stoller, Piano
Sunday, Mar. 1, 2009- Island Church - Brunch: 12:30 - Concert: 2:00
The Big Orchestral Sound: Adding double-bass to a chamber group makes for a great orchestral sound, and when you throw in a trumpet, you've really got something, especially with the wonderful acoustics of the Island Church. This concert will feature two glorious works - Schubert's Trout Quintet, and the Saint-Saens Septet for string quartet, double bass, piano, and trumpet.
Featuring Steve Abra, Trumpet, Jacquey Malcolm, 'Cello, Dan Kushner, Violin, Elizabeth Morris, Viola, Coby Stoller, Piano, and a very distinguished guest on double bass.
Sunday, Apr. 26, 2009 - Island Church - Brunch: 12:30 - Concert: 2:00
The Big Wind Ensemble is back - need we say more? This time, we're going late romantic with a Wind Symphony by Richard Strauss. Conducted by Harold Gomez, and featuring Jonathan Krehm, Clarinet, Senya Trubashnik, Oboe, and many many others.
Sunday, May 31, 2008 - Island Church - Brunch: 12:30 - Concert: 2:00
Grande Finale: To wrap up our season, we're upping the ante a notch or two by featuring some very distinguished musicians from the US. They'll be playing 3 successive works written by Brahms at the peak of his creative power - the Opus 99 Sonata for 'Cello and Piano, the Opus 100 Sonata for Violin and Piano, and the Opus 101 Trio for Violin, 'Cello, and Piano.
Featuring Vadim Serebryany, Piano, Wolfram Koessel, 'Cello, and Yosuke Kawasaki, Violin.
